The Launch of My Camping Mall
By William C. Harrison

Retired Lieutenant Colonel (William C. Harrison) launches a Camping and Hiking Website (http://www.mycampingmall.com). This site offers an opportunity for the outdoor enthusiasts to purchase various items that will aid in his comfort when making a camping trip. Included among these items are camping and hiking gear, cooking stoves, lanterns, binoculars, compasses, radios, flashlights, sleeping bags, hiking boots, backpacks, tents, tables, chairs, kayaks, canoes, lightweight and ultra-lightweight clothing, and various types of camping supplies (water, food, fuel, tools, maps, and a first aid kit).

My Camping Mall is intended to provide a full range of products for the occasional camper and the serious camper as well as the foot camper and the camper who travels by vehicle (car, SUV, RV, truck, or other). One of the most important item of consideration when camping is one?s sleeping accommodation. This is important whether you?re traveling by foot or by vehicle. When camping, most people use some type of tent. Camping tents are often classified as a 1-person, 2-person tent or a family tent. Irrespective of the classification of the tent, one should always check the actual dimensions of it. One should also check on how the tent is configured (whether square, rectangular, round, narrow, etc.). That brings up the question of how one will fit inside the tent. Be sure and also check the height dimensions of the tent to determine whether there?s standing room, sitting room or just lying room. The followings are types of tents.

Frame Tents: These are camping tents that have the best headroom and are useful for families and those who plan to cook inside the tent. The disadvantage of the frame tent is that it?s heavy and difficult to carry and only suitable if you?re traveling by vehicle.

Ridge Tent: This is a triangular shaped tent. It?s a more traditional than you?re used to seeing. You rarely see this one around nowadays.

Dome Tents: A dome-shaped tent is very simple to erect and very lightweight. The flexible poles thread through the tent fabric crisscrossing in the middle. The poles are normally made of reinforced plastic or a metal alloy. Dome tents can range from a very compact one, to a 2-person tent, to a family sized tent. Hoop Tents: These are a cross between a ridge and a dome tent. They are strong with room inside. They can be multiple hoop, also known as a tunnel tent. Hoop tents are often favored by mountain climbers because of their strength in high winds and extreme weather conditions.

Geodesic Tents: A geodesic tent is similar to a dome tent, but with a slightly different structure which gives them greater strength in high winds. Touring Tents: Touring tents can be extended ridge tents or extended dome tents. They normally have a porch area, which is very useful for cooking. Touring tents often have windows and are the tents of choice for people who spend long periods of time camping.

In addition to tents, My Camping Mall (http://www.mycampingmall.com) sponsors various types of hiking gear and a variety of sleeping bags. A comfortable pair of hiking boots can make one?s travel through the woods a very pleasant one. On the other hand, an uncomfortable pair of boots can make one?s hiking a miserable venture. Sleeping bags come in various sizes and shapes and are used by both children and adults. While many people sleep in a bag directly on the ground surface, others will use a mat, air mattress or pad to improve the comfort of the sleeper. A basic bag is simply a blanket with a zipper on two sides allowing it to be folded in half and secured in position. This works well for most camping needs but is inadequate under more demanding circumstances. The second major type of bag is called the mummy bag because of its tapered shape, fitted drawstrings, and synthetic fill.

For the water sports enthusiasts, My Camping Mall carries a line of kayaks and canoes. Included among these are fishing kayaks, inflatable kayaks, kayak canoes, and sailing canoes. Kayaks come in many different sizes and shapes. There are tandem kayaks for two people. There are kayaks designed for solo or single seat. Then, there are the sit-on-top designed kayaks and the sit-in-side designed kayaks. Kayaks are used for various purposes. Some are used for just sport riding. Some are used for fishing purposes. Some kayaks are heavy and cumbersome, especially fishing kayaks. Canoes also come in various sizes and shapes.
